How to use the Redirect Checker
- Enter a URL (https:// is optional) and press "Check".
- The top shows the number of redirects, final status code, total time and final URL.
- "Redirect chain" lists every hop: green is 200 or permanent, yellow is temporary, red is an error.
Examples
One hop for http and one for www (should be merged)
Merge them: http://example.com should 301 straight to https://www.example.com/.
http://example.com
#1 301 http://example.com → https://example.com/
#2 301 https://example.com/ → https://www.example.com/
#3 200 https://www.example.com/
301 or 302?
| 301 / 308 | Permanent. The URL has moved for good (new domain or URL structure); search engines pass ranking signals to the new URL. 308 also preserves POST requests. |
|---|---|
| 302 / 307 | Temporary. The original URL will be used again (maintenance page, A/B test); search engines keep indexing the original. |
| 303 | After a form submission, send the user to a result page with GET. |
Long chains slow users down, and crawlers may stop following after a handful of hops — redirect every old URL straight to its final destination.

FAQ
My browser redirects but the tool shows none. Why?
It is probably a JavaScript or <meta http-equiv="refresh"> redirect. This tool only follows HTTP redirects, which search engines handle best — consider switching to a server-side 301.
Which redirect should I use when changing domains?
A 301 (or 308) permanent redirect, mapping every old URL to its matching new URL rather than sending everything to the home page.
Why does it say the URL points to a private network address?
For security the tool never connects to localhost, private IPs or reserved addresses, and stops if a redirect leads there.
