What is a Unix timestamp?

A Unix timestamp (epoch time) is the number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970. It is independent of time zones, which is why databases, APIs and logs use it. JavaScript's Date.now() and Java's System.currentTimeMillis() return milliseconds, so they have three extra digits.

Signed 32-bit timestamps overflow on January 19, 2038 (the Year 2038 problem); modern systems use 64-bit values.

FAQ

How do I know if a timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?

Count the digits: current times are 10 digits in seconds and 13 in milliseconds. The tool detects it and shows the unit under "Detected unit".

Why is the converted time off by several hours?

Unix timestamps are UTC. Choose your time zone in the tool, and make sure your code converts to local time when displaying.

Which time zone is used for the date I type?

A date without a zone (e.g. 2026-10-03 12:00) is read in the selected time zone; ISO 8601 strings with Z or +09:00 use the zone in the string.

What does a negative timestamp mean?

A time before 1970 — for example −86400 is December 31, 1969.
